If you’re here, you’re probably wondering how to achieve great skin while navigating the challenges of ADHD. The secret ingredient to great skin with ADHD? A consistent skincare routine. The catch? ADHD makes sticking to routines insanely difficult.
The ADHD Skincare Struggle
We crave newness and spontaneity, and a skincare routine doesn’t exactly deliver that excitement. The repetitive nature of skincare can feel mundane, leading to skipped steps or abandoned routines. After years of planning to start this blog, I’ve realized there isn’t a magic hack. The only thing that has worked for me is, quite simply, just doing it.
ADHD brings unique challenges to maintaining a skincare routine. Forgetfulness, impulsivity, and a lack of consistent habits can make it seem impossible to stick to a regimen. ADHD also makes us more prone to picking at our skin and popping pimples. If you’re using any medication to manage your symptoms, such as Adderall, you could even experience more skin sensitivity.
But here’s the thing: understanding how ADHD affects your skincare routine is the first step to overcoming these challenges.
Finding What Works for You
Creating a routine that suits your ADHD tendencies is key. Here are a few tips that have helped me and might help you too:
- Keep It Simple: Start with a basic routine. You don’t need a 10-step regimen. Cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen can be enough to start with.
- Distract yourself from skin picking: Unfortunately, picking at your skin is one of the harder parts of ADHD Skincare. It’s only easy to stop if you know when it starts, which isn’t always. My hack? I spent a ton of time reading 5 reasons to never pick your face. I am training my mind to subconsciously associate face-picking with negativity. This doesn’t always work, however. My backup plan is to distract myself. Luckily, ADHD makes this so much easier to do.
- Use Visual Reminders: Keep your skincare products in a visible spot. This serves as a reminder to use them. Sticky notes on the mirror can also be helpful.
- Set Alarms: Use your phone’s alarm or reminders to nudge you when it’s time for your skincare routine. Consistency is built through repetition.
- Incorporate It Into Existing Habits: Tie your skincare routine to an existing habit, like brushing your teeth. This makes it easier to remember and stick to it.
- Use a buddy system: One “hack” that has helped me immensely is getting someone else to start skincare with me and ensuring that we keep each other accountable.
